It’s been ages and ages (almost ten months, actually) since the last time I gave a brief resume of the things happening in my life. Well, here it goes.
2006 started okay. Near the end of the first quarter of the year, I went to Libya, to see the total eclipse, and returned safely (although my flight back home got delayed badly!)
I’ve made tons of pictures. A small selection of em can be seen over here. Comments are in dutch, though the pics speak for themselves.
I kinda stopped making monochloroacetic acid. I still work at tha factory, for over a year now, but they stopped extracting chlorine from salt roughly a month ago, and we quit adding chlorine to acetic acid about a week ago. It’s planned that by the end of this month, we’ll stop producing sodium monochloroacetate as well (read; shut down entirely) so right now, I’m quite busy trying to find a new employer.
Hey, this is not so bad… I’ve had a great and interesting job for over a year, and I knew the factory would close the moment I started working there… I’ll live.
Beside my hunt for a job, there’s something else haunting my mind, and it’s been haunting my mind for months. I’d really, really like to go to French Guiana to see the forthcoming annular, and, of course, the spaceport in Kourou and Île du Diable (the former penal-colony where Papillon was set)
What’s keeping me back is both the money (800 euro’s for the flight alone.. it’s like emptying a bucket!) and the moment. I’ll be out of work in a week or two. Taking a holiday some 2 weeks after losing your job is kinda awkward, and, I guess, makes it harder to find a new job. Especially since I figured out that, in order to find fitting employment, I’ll have to move to the western part of The Netherlands.
Finding a job, a home, moving and taking a holiday at the same time… hrm.. I’m capable of a lot, but I figure that might just be a too large stack of hay to pile upon my fork all at once.
Merry christmas and a 2006!

This is a car advertisement from New Zealand. When they finished filming the ad, the people who made it noticed a ghostly white mist moving along the side of the car, and an eerie sound… you may need to turn the volume up, enough to hear it.
The ad was never put on TV because of the unexplained ghostly phenomenon.
About halfway, as the car goes past the trees, look and you will see the white mist crossing in front of the car then following it along the road……Spooky!
Watch the clip here!
Thanks, Cazzie
Madrid…

Hard to imagine that it’s been a week since I returned home from Madrid.
The memory’s still so fresh like the eclipse happened yesterday.
Like I announced earlier, I went to madrid to view the annular solar eclipse from te park surrounding the planetarium. I’m glad I did.
Madrid turned out to be a marvelous city that actually lives, day and night. Sure, the shops close whenever you don’t expect it (especially during siesta-hours, and at night… no greasy snacks are sold anywhere when you return home after going out) but the fascinating old buildings, clean streets (swept dayly!), beautiful parks, friendly, relaxed people, great food and one of the brightest blue skies I have ever seen really compensate for that. Nobody in this city appears to be in a hurry, and that’s catching.
I did find out the time I’ve spent there is actually way too short to get to know the city. Heck, I bet you can spend an entire month there looking at old stuff and art… There are quite a few world-famous museums and exhibitions in Madrid, like the Prado, Thyssen, Royal Palace and the Botanical Gardens, but I haven’t seen any of those places from the inside… so maybe I am a cultural barbarian
The only reason I can give not to return is the fact that there are still a lot of places on the globe I haven’t yet visited… but if it takes an Iberia-flight to get there, I’ll surely arrange an extended stopover at Barajas Airport

Today Floortje the dog was put to sleep. This very moment she’s lying peacefully on the kitchen-floor. Almost serene.
I’m gonna miss her…
Here’s an update…

Yeah, I know.. intended to write semi-regular updating pieces of text in a language I was not raised in, don’t use fequently, and surely don’t think in. Anyway, to make a long story short, since I returned from Panama, I wrecked a car, got me a new one, lost a job, but found a new one of those as well. By the end of this week, I’ll be fabricating monochloroacetic acid. Sounds dangerous, and, indeed, this stuff is highly toxic, but the only things I have to prevent are eye/skin contact, inhalation and ingestion… the kind of things you dan’t want to try with overheated steam either
Unfortunately, because of this new job, I won’t be able to travel north to visit Skänninge Marken anymore, but I’m quite sure I’ll be able to be there next year.
Eclipse-wise; I have booked a nice desert-tour to be able to watch the next total solar eclipse from the north Sahara, and, although I haven’t made any firm arrangements, I almost know for a fact that I’ll manage to get to Spain in time for october’s annular eclipse.
Although I’m not yet sure what my destination should be; the region of Valencia, or Madrid? In Valencia annularity will last slightly longer, but in Madrid the Planetario de Madrid has organised a public viewing in the park where the planetary is situated. Sounds nice.
Further on; there appears to be a plague of white grubs; the larvea of May Bugs. Everywhere around, green plants turn to a brownish colour, since white grubs tend to feed themselves with plant-roots.
Oh.. and I finished reading the Half Blood Prince.
That’s about it.. any questions?

Summer is a time for refreshments, like a nice cool bottle of beer, an ice-cream, or.. a combination of both!
Now that’s a genuine polder-compromis.
